If you are considering getting a dental implant to replace a tooth that was lost or extracted, then the health of your jaw-bone where the implant will be attached determines whether you will need bone grafting or not. Just as important is how much bone you have left, as when a tooth is missing for a long period of time, the bone no longer receives stimulation from chewing and can slowly deteriorate. A sinus lift is an additional procedure that must be performed when some bone grafts are placed. Read on to find out what this is and if you may need it.

What is a Sinus Lift?

While it may sound like a procedure to fix faulty sinuses, a sinus lift is actually a procedure often needed in the upper jaw before implanting a replacement molar. When placing a bone graft near the front of the mouth, there is simply more space to put it without it interfering with the sinuses. In the back of the mouth, however, the sinuses are often close to where a bone graft must be placed, so the sinus has to be moved to make room for the new bone tissue.

During a sinus lift procedure, the sinus is literally lifted from the top jaw to give the new bone a place to go, then the bone is placed. Typically, the sinus lift and bone grafting are done in one procedure, and you must then go back after your natural jaw "accepts" the bone and the sinus is healed for the implant to be placed.

Who Needs a Sinus Lift Before Getting a Dental Implant?

When a new tooth is being implanted into any area of the mouth, there must be enough bone for the implant to adhere to well. If there is not enough, then bone grafting is needed. A sinus lift is needed if the bone graft needs to be placed in the back of the mouth when there is not enough room to place with bone without moving the sinus.

You are at risk for needing a sinus lift before a dental implant if you are replacing a back molar and the molar has been missing long enough the natural bone has receded. There is no specific time period when bone recedes, as it varies from person to person. The only way to find out if you need a sinus lift or bone grafting at all before your dental implant is to have a consultation with a dental implant specialist who can then examine your mouth to tell you exactly what procedures you may need.

If you are getting a dental implant to replace a molar that sits underneath your sinuses, then there is a chance you may need a sinus lift bone graft. This is a common procedure, so don't be afraid if your dental implant specialist says you need one. It is just one step that can get you closer to your goal of having a great set of teeth again.
