If you want to completely transform your smile, porcelain veneers may be a good option for you. Veneers are small, tooth-shaped shells that are placed over existing teeth to create a new smile. People often turn to veneers when they have chipped, cracked, discolored, or misshapen teeth. If you plan on getting veneers in the near future, you can expect the following:

Exam

During your initial visit, your dentist will take x-rays of your teeth and jaws and exam your mouth. You will then have the opportunity to talk with your dentist about what kind of smile you're hoping to achieve. Veneers are custom made for each patient, so you can essentially design a custom smile. Many dentists now use computer programs that will allow you to see how your veneers will look after they are placed on your teeth.

Preparation for Veneers

In order to prepare your teeth for veneers, your dentist will remove a very small amount of the surface of the teeth so the veneers will fit properly. After this is done, impressions of your teeth will be made so the veneers can be made the exact right size. At this point, some dentists will apply temporary veneers, while others will wait for the permanent veneers to be delivered. Speak with your dentist to see which method he or she prefers.

Application

When your permanent veneers arrive, you will need to return to your dentist's office to have them placed on your existing teeth. Before the veneers are applied, your dentist will most likely clean all of your teeth. Your front teeth will then be gently sanded down in order to create a rougher surface that will help the veneers bind better. A special cement is then used to attach the veneers to your natural teeth; after all of the veneers are attached, an ultraviolet light is used to help the cement harden quickly.

Maintenance

Some dentists will ask you to come back a few weeks after the veneers are placed so they can ensure that they are attached properly. After that, veneers typically do not require any other type of regular maintenance. All you will need to do is brush and floss like normal, and make regular dental appointments for exams and cleanings. While veneers do not require a lot of day to day maintenance, they are not permanent. They typically last for 5 to 10 years, and then they will need to be removed and replaced with new veneers.
