When you get a tooth implant, you get a serious procedure done that requires lots of healing time. A dental implant goes into the jaw bone of your mouth and nestles along the gum line, so it's causing some disturbance to your jaw bone, gums, and surrounding mouth tissues when you have your dental implants put in.

Your dentist will likely give you pain medication for healing as well as anti-inflammatory medications, and if you have a mouth infection or gingivitis at the time of getting your tooth implant put in, antibiotics as well. While medications will help you heal following your tooth implant, the following things can help you heal faster as well.

Get lots of rest

One of the most natural ways you can heal your body and make your tooth implant area get back to normal faster is getting lots of rest. Your body does its best healing in a rested state, so make sure you get uninterrupted sleep and stay on a solid sleep schedule as much as possible. If you cannot get a full night's rest every night, try to nap during the day when you can, since a light nap can help reduce stress and give your mouth and jaw a break from movement so you can feel better while you heal.

Avoid hard or chewy foods

Foods that are hard or take a lot of chewing can wear down your already sore jaw. Stick to a more liquid diet until you feel better or your dentist gives you the go-ahead. Foods to consider include oatmeal, yogurt, soups, smoothies, and mashed potatoes.

Avoid strenuous activities

Strenuous activities will not only increase the blood flow to the affected area where you had your tooth implant put in, they can put you at risk of injury or pain. Until you have fully healed and been fitted for your crown or cap, avoid strenuous activities. Light exercise is still OK once you are feeling better and not taking any medication that can cause dizziness or fatigue.

Always take your medications before and after your tooth implant, as directed by your dentist. This is the best way to ensure you keep your pain at bay and keep infection away as well. It's normal to feel great immediately following the procedure then sore later, but if you have increased swelling and bleeding, let your dentist know so you can treat any potential issues before they get worse.
